About this volunteering opportunity

Help young people achieve their full potential by supporting them to gain skills for life, learning and employment.
We are looking for volunteers to engage young people, aged 16-25 years living in our Supported Housing, to participate in small group activity sessions, which have been planned with the Volunteer & Engagement Coordinator.
As an Engagement Volunteer you will:
• Gain new skills, training & experience
• Help young people get involved and participate
• Help young people build their confidence
• Ensure young people feel valued & supported
• Commit to leading or supporting a number of sessions over a period of time that you can offer

YMCA DownsLink Group is a charity that has been serving local communities since 1855. Each year we support over 15,000 children, young people and families across Sussex and Surrey. Children, young people and families are at the heart of YMCA DownsLink Group with a focus on the needs of young people who find themselves on the fringes of society and need support.

Induction, training and support offered with this opportunity

Volunteers will receive training and regular support and supervision from the Volunteer & Engagement Coordinator. Training will be a chance to meet other YMCA Volunteers and will cover:

Skills or experience needed for this opportunity

1. House gardener
Are you green fingered? Do have a passion for nature and for engaging young people?
To tend to the house gardens in Brighton and Hove Supported Housing projects for vulnerable young people. To carry out simple projects, such as create a herb garden, potting plants, clearing weeds and to encourage young people who are residents to get involved with caring for and using the garden. To volunteer in pairs and ideally able to commit to 2.5 per week on Friday afternoons, although there is flexibility with days and times.

2. Sewing and craft
Make, mend and sew – would you like to share creative skills to engage young people?
To volunteer within Brighton and Hove Supported Housing for vulnerable young people aged 16-25 years. To deliver weekly drop-in, small group sewing and craft sessions; doing simple projects, such as mending and repairing and upcycling and other creative sessions. To volunteer in pairs, for two hours a week on Monday evenings, although there is flexibility with days and times.
As well as patience, resilience, empathy and tolerance, a sense of humour is essential!

3. Cooking
Are you passionate about food and would like to engage young people through cooking?
To volunteer within Brighton and Hove Supported Housing for vulnerable young people aged 16-25 years. T
