All Areas

About this volunteering opportunity

Volunteering with us is an easy and rewarding way to make a difference to the lives of young people living in your community.  As a volunteer tutors you will be working with pupils in schools across Sussex, increasing their subject knowledge, confidence and study skills.

We seek to partner with non-selective state schools with at least double the national average of pupils who are eligible for Free School Meals, ensuring our tutoring is reaching the areas where it is needed most.

By volunteering with us for just one hour a week, at a time and a location that suits you, you can help to improve the future prospects of young people in your community, changing their lives and helping to ensure they leave school with the grades needed to build a bright future.

You will be able to use and develop skills, whilst also having a direct impact on a young person’s academic attainment – an independent evaluator found that having seven or more sessions with us added the value of up to ½ a GCSE grade to that pupil’s results – and you’ll see these changes first hand.

About this organisation

Action Tutoring is an education charity working in partnership with schools, to support disadvantaged young people to achieve through targeted tuition. We recruit volunteers from all backgrounds to tutor pupils at weekly sessions, for an hour each time, to increase their subject knowledge, confidence and study skills in maths and English, with a view to enable them to go on to further education, employment or training. Volunteering with us is a rewarding way to make a difference to young lives.

Induction, training and support offered with this opportunity

As a tutor you will attend a specially designed training session to tell you everything you need to know about tutoring.  You will also be using structured resources, developed by curriculum specialists, to deliver your tutoring.  Action Tutoring will pay for and process your DBS check.

Once trained you’ll be able to select a programme in a school and time slot that fits with your schedule.  You’ll then be paired with a couple of pupils and be responsible for tutoring them once a week, for a term.  There will be a member of the Action Tutoring team on hand every week to support you throughout.  We can reimburse your travel expenses up to the value of £5 per session and provide a reference to validate your commitment.
