Cooking Assistant with The Regency Town House

Brunswick

About this volunteering opportunity

In the basement of the Town House is a kitchen which has recently come back to life. We work every Thursday and sometimes in the weekends recreating food of the past. Food that would have been made in the kitchen back in 1829. The team is varied with very good cooks and some people who are just learning. The atmosphere is friendly and open. We love inviting new people to the kitchen to learn new skills or perhaps try out recipes they wouldn't ever attempt at home.

About this organisation

The Regency Town House is located at 13 Brunswick Square near the beach in Hove. Brunswick Square forms part of Brunswick Town. It has two full-time members of staff. It also has a team of volunteers whose efforts are helping to transform the building into a museum and heritage centre. The house was built in the 1820s It was designed in the Regency architectural style It holds regular fundraising activities including Dine Like a Servant. These help raise money to continue restoration.

Induction, training and support offered with this opportunity

We train each other where ever possible. The more experienced volunteers can teach less experienced people. Recipes, equipment and ingredients are provided. Volunteers are encouraged to try new techniques. It doesn't matter if things go wrong. The emphasis is on learning and encouragement.

Skills or experience needed for this opportunity

The main qualities required are an openness to learn new skills. Also an interest (and perhaps love) of history is very useful. We work in a beautiful old Regency kitchen and this role suits those who have an interest in old cookery books, old techniques and old ways of doing things.
