About this volunteering opportunity

Our clients come to us from a range of backgrounds. Many of them have complex needs and We are seeking an experienced individual with a background in money advice (financial advice/insolvency practitioner) who would like to join our money advice team in a volunteer capacity, assisting our clients in managing their money and budgeting, focusing on the right solutions for them.

You would join our small friendly team working out of our office on Exeter Street near Seven dials
- Meeting with clients and building relationships
- Taking detailed financial information, such as income and expenditure and using this to help the client to set a realistic budget
- Working with our in house benefits advice team to check that individuals are claiming everything they are entitled to
- Writing to creditors and agreeing repayment plans for debt
- Exploring other options, such as Debt Relief Orders or bankruptcy orders and navigating the process with the client
- Managing and maintaining accurate client files, logging relevant information on our computer systems

St Luke’s Advice Service SLAS is a registered charity (no. 1094894) providing debt and benefit advice to people in need across Brighton and Hove. We are a free and confidential service, helping those who need us, for as long as they need us. We hold the AQS quality standard mark and are well known and respected within the city.

Induction, training and support offered with this opportunity

We will support you through on the job training, alongside a fully comprehensive package including exams, leading to a recognised accredited money adviser qualification. Because of this, we are looking for someone who can give a minimum of a day a week, either as a whole or two half days for not less than a year.

Skills or experience needed for this opportunity

You must be
- Able to commit to a day a week as a minimum for at least one year
- Confident at meeting new people
- Able to build a rapport and extract relevant information quickly and accurately, gaining a client’s trust is a key component of this role
- Experienced in the provision of money advice
- Empathetic and understanding of individual circumstances
- Focused on finding the solution that works best for the client, providing practical guidance and working with them for as long as they need
