Workshop Assistant, Sing and Play with Open Strings Music

About this volunteering opportunity

The volunteering role:

We have been commissioned by Brighton & Hove CCG to run Sing Healthy Play Happy - our weekly creative dementia-friendly music project - from 2016 to 2019.

We have a vacancy for one sessional volunteer to join our delivery team, working alongside two facilitators on either Monday or Friday mornings in seniors' settings in Brighton. The group plays/explores instruments, sings, and creates new songs together; it comprises a lively and friendly mix of people living with dementia, their carers, and the wider community.

This volunteering role is an opportunity for anyone interested in learning more about and developing the practice of delivering participatory music for wellbeing in a hands-on group setting.

Main responsibilities:

·        assisting the facilitators in running the sessions

·        distributing sessional resources (eg: instruments)

·        helping to create and maintain a welcoming and friendly atmosphere, including one-to-one interactions with participants

About this organisation

We are a Brighton-based social enterprise running community music projects in the city and beyond since 2013. We offer participatory music as a tool for connection in a variety of community-based settings: for mental health, with older people, with adults with learning disabilities, and with people with dementia and their carers. A central part of Open Strings Music’s vision is that we are all able to play music / make sounds together whatever individuals’ abilities or needs.

There will be an hour’s briefing and practical session as an induction before the volunteer’s first session. Volunteers will be required to attend a 30-minute debrief period as part of the delivery team at the end of each session, as well as a termly check-in with a facilitator.
