About this volunteering opportunity

We are looking for volunteers interested in expanding their experience in community arts engagement and social enterprise development, particularly in areas of arts facilitation, art and music therapy, peer support and community support work.
We are also looking for volunteers to support our upcoming art project, funded by the local Rampion Wind Farm which explores two significant themes of climate change and the need for good mental health.

Key volunteering areas/roles include:
- Befriending, buddying and mentoring
- Co-ordination and co-facilitation of activities and events (mainly art and music-related)
- Social media and publicity
- Fundraising and finance
- Community networking and outreach
- General and helping (on-site project assistance)
- Food and nutrition (and its links with mental health)

About this organisation

We deliver a weekly creative peer- support drop-in.

Synergy Creative Community is a mental health user led and run community organisation. Synergy takes a creative approach to mental wellbeing: by running weekly sessions of art, improvised music, poetry, creative writing, cookery and mindfulness meditation.

Induction, training and support offered with this opportunity

Volunteers are inducted on their first visit. This includes an introduction to the organisation and the role, a tour of the building and introduction to other staff and grow participants, an overview of relevant policies and procedures, as well as welfare arrangements and refreshment facilities.

Volunteers are supported through regular supervision with the project co-ordinator.

Volunteers are invited to attend Synergy's first round of peer support training, being delivered in mid July 2018. We aim for this training to be continued and offered for free to Synergy volunteers.

Skills or experience needed for this opportunity

No specific skills are essential, though some desired skills, interests and qualities are listed below:
- Empathetic and a good listener
- Good communicator, willing to be open and share their experiences
- Practical and adaptable
- Art and music, food and nutrition, and their links with mental health and well being
- Interest in community arts engagement
- Interest in art and/or music therapy, or other related and complimentary therapies (such as mindfulness meditation)
- Interest in peer support and/or support work
- Workshop facilitation or activities coordination
- Social media and publicity
- Fundraising and finance
- Community networking and outreach
