Community Allotment volunteer with Brighton and Hove Organic Gardening Group (BHOGG)

About this volunteering opportunity

On Sundays in the spring, summer and autumn from 11 a.m. to about 1 pm joining a team of volunteers of all ages in cultivating three organic allotments organically. It is in a beautiful location that is described on the website

The volunteer work involves joining in the community project where we share our experience, the cultivation and the crops that are produced with all those who work on the allotments. All the equipment is provided and it is suitable for healthy people from 25 to 85, though some come with young families.

At the Spring and Autumn equinoxes and at the Summer and winter solstices we organise social events, while during the year more formal training in organic gardening is provided for those who want to know more. Each Sunday there can be from 10 to 30 of us, depending on the weather and time of year, some constant gardeners others dipping in and out on occasion.

Ideally come as often as you can, but you will be welcome to join in on any Sunday.

Induction, training and support offered with this opportunity

Any induction, training and support will be provided onsite at the Weald Allotment site. Additionally, there are opportunities to attend a wide range of events and training on organic gardening organised by the wider Organic Gardeners Group ( BHOGG). There is a wide range of literature that can be shared, while there is a wealth of experience among the gardeners in the Organic Gardening Group.

This is a voluntary community effort so our community allotment about everyone sharing, becoming members and joining in rather expecting some service provision with paid staff.

Skills or experience needed for this opportunity

The key skills required  are a willingness to join in with others, a desire to share the enjoyable and more challenging elements of gardening and a determination to have fun.

Teamwork is a key element, while we all enjoy each others company and the social side at special events.

It is important to want to garden organically and to garden organically on the allotment site. If you bring skills with you, so much the better, but we are happy to involve novices. We all started organic gardening at some stage.

After a trial period of a month or so we would then ask you to become a member of the Organic Gardening Group
