The Level - volunteer gardening club with Brighton & Hove City Council

St Peters

About this volunteering opportunity

The Level volunteer gardening club generally operates weekly on a Thursday, 10.30am-noon.

The club is a small, friendly and welcoming club operating at the multi-award-winning The Level park which, post-restoration, is an exemplar site for environmental sustainability and accessibility.

Volunteer gardeners, after receiving full training and information including a health and safety briefing, work alongside the onsite Garden Manager at the park, on a number of seasonal gardening tasks such as: weeding, pruning, dead-heading etc. The Garden Manager, Steve Peters, has extensive horticultural and garden management experience, and welcomes anyone with or without previous gardening experience, and loves helping people learn, understand and fully appreciate the joy of gardening, especially but not only for all its mental and physical well-being benefits. Any specific additional required training is given.

Volunteer gardeners are expected to wear their own appropriate clothing while working, but other required items (ie gardening gloves) and gardening tools, are provided. Gardeners wear a cotton tabard while working.

Induction, training and support offered with this opportunity

The Garden Manager, Steve Peters, has extensive horticulural and garden management experience, and welcomes anyone as a volunteer with or without previous gardening experience. Steve loves helping people learn, understand and fully appreciate the benefits of gardening in terms of mental and physical well-being. Any specific additional required training is given.

At least four gardeners who have previously volunteered with the volunteer garden club have been so enthused by their gardening experience at The Level that they have gone on to take Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) courses - but this is not obligatory!

Full information & training, including health and safety training, must be undertaken before starting.

We will do our best to accommodate any special requirements, eg disabilities or other concerns, and if this is the case we recommend the person contacts us for a discussion, so we can see how we may be able to help make the volunteering experience fully satisfying.

We will provide references for people who have worked with us for a specified period of time.

We have a free-to-borrow horticultural books library, and the garden manager always provides a pre-work-session briefing about the areas to be worked in, and what needs to be done that day and why.

Skills or experience needed for this opportunity

No previous experience or qualifications are required, as we offer all training needed.

All we ask is that people are willing to work alongside the Garden Manager to learn - and enjoy the gardening!
