About this volunteering opportunity

Volunteers can find their niche amongst this small team. You can choose to participate in gardening; or work in the cafe serving hot and cold drinks and wrapped snacks. This also involves being the friendly face of Foredown, greeting customers and acting as reception for general information about the camera obscura.

We are particularly looking for someone enthusiastic about social media to put Foredown Tower on the cyber map.

About this organisation

Foredown Tower is a historic converted water tower. It now houses a camera obscura (optical device used to view the landscape), a cafe and classrooms used by PACA (Portslade Aldridge Community Academy) Adult Education. The cafe is popular with the students and some members of the public drop in. A lovely garden surrounds the iconic building. Foredown Tower is totally run by volunteers except for the teaching staff.

Induction, training and support offered with this opportunity

Training will be on-going as needed, depending on which day of the week you chose to volunteer. Support will be from other volunteers, although there is some off-site supervision.

Amongst the long-standing volunteers, areas of knowledge include astronomy, photography, flora and fauna, computing, medicine, languages. You would be very welcome to bring your own knowledge to share.

Skills or experience needed for this opportunity

Cafe: friendly, sociable disposition. Aware of hygiene (no certificate needed). Basic maths (adding up). Patience and able to amuse yourself when there are no customers.

Garden: interest in gardening and not be too bothered about the Foredown Wind.

Social media: interest and knowledge about social media. Have ideas about how we could promote ourselves.
