Kitchen Kick Start - cooking group with 16-25's with Food Matters

About this volunteering opportunity

Our Kitchen Kick Start project supports young, 16-25 year olds who are living insecurely to improve their cooking skills and confidence in the kitchen, covering things like healthy diets, budgeting and weekly meal planning. Our participants are from a range of backgrounds, including care leavers, refugees & asylum seekers and young Mums with babies.

We deliver 6 week cooking courses in Brighton & Hove, East Sussex and West Sussex, in local community kitchens and youth centres, or in the shared kitchens within the housing the participants live in.

Volunteers will help our cookery leaders in our Kitchen Kick Start cookery project to ensure the smooth running of our courses, whilst helping to enable participants to get involved.

Key tasks include:

• Helping the cookery leader with prep and cleaning and washing up before and after each
session
• Welcoming participants as they arrive
• Communicating and engaging with members of the group and to help them to participate in the
session
• Ensuring health, safety and food hygiene standards are met
• Supporting the cookery leader with registration and evaluation paperwork as required

About this organisation

Food Matters works to create sustainable and fair, re-localised food systems. We run training and deliver projects which empower individuals and communities to make better food choices - better for health, for the environment and for the local economy. We influence national and local policy through research, as well as offering expert advice in the community food sector.

Volunteers need to complete the application form available on our website (or email us) & will be subject to a DBS check.

Induction, training and support offered with this opportunity

An induction with the project officer and/or the cookery trainer will cover
• what to expect from the sessions
• what the role is and is not
• basic health and safety info (particularly in a kitchen environment)
• basic safeguarding, boundaries and confidentiality guidelines
• time to read our volunteer policy/handbook and ask answer any questions

Before and after each session, the cookery trainer will do a check in/debrief to see how you are that day and to see how you felt the session went - a chance to give feedback or raise any concerns.

• An interest in food and cooking
• Outgoing, friendly and supportive individual who is able to demonstrate patience and understanding
