Story Mentor with Little Green Pig

All Areas

About this volunteering opportunity

As a story mentor, you’ll be working alongside children and young people in workshops to give them one-to-one help to create their own writing. Workshops could be with a whole school class or in a smaller after school group. We’ll train you but your skills and personality will be vital too.

About this organisation

Little Green Pig is a not-for-profit company. We offer children and young people space and time to get creative with words. We believe in the right to write, and that this vital form of self-expression builds confidence, communication and social skills. Creativity and fun are at the heart of what we do.

We offer free writing workshops for young people in Brighton & Hove aged 7 to 18, especially those who experience social or educational disadvantage.

Induction, training and support offered with this opportunity

All volunteers come to an information session where they find out more about the organisation and the role, then a half-day training event which takes you through our creative process, ways of working with children, behaviour management and safeguarding. Ongoing training and professional development opportunities will also be available, and there is the chance to take on more responsibility and be trained to lead workshops.

Skills or experience needed for this opportunity

Patience, enthusiasm, reliability and professionalism, a desire to work with children and young people.

You need to commit to volunteering with us for a period of six months, and agree to volunteer at least 6 times within that period.
