Brighton and Hove Volunteer SearchDetails of Opportunity

Trustee of St Anne's Trust at St Anne's Centre for Homelessness with St Anne's Trust

Queens Park

About this volunteering opportunity

It costs about £150 per day to open our centre to 30-50 customers, and the centre is open every weekday except weekends and Bank Holidays, from 9:30 to 12:30 for customers with half an hour either side for staff and volunteers to prepare and close up.  We have a Facebook as well as our website where more detail can be found about our work.

To maintain our 'open door' policy we do not seek any funding which comes with restrictions, so this rules out central or local government funding.  An ability to raise funds subject to this restriction, and some legal knowledge, would add to our trustees' skill-set.

Like the current trustees, we would expect you to want to be active within the operation of the Centre, as an occasional volunteer working with our service users.

About this organisation

St Anne's Trust, registered charity 1097471, funds St Anne's Day Centre which provides shelter and support for rough sleepers and poorly housed men and women in Brighton and Hove.  The centre is located in Brighton, and is supported by voluntary contributions coming mainly from Sussex and local Church communities, via St Anne's Trust.  The current three trustees wish to add a further trustee, to strengthen our management of the centre via our 2 paid managers and 30 unpaid volunteers.

Induction, training and support offered with this opportunity

The other trustees will help with familiarising the successful candidate with the aspects of acting as a trustee, should this be needed.  Formal training may be appropriate, and reasonable expenses can be reimbursed where incurred with prior approval of the trustees.

Skills or experience needed for this opportunity

A familiarity with participating in meetings between those with management responsibilities and the persons being managed, those who are salaried as well as those who are acting in a voluntary capacity.

A strongly held desire to help to reduce or eliminate rough sleeping in the city of Brighton and Hove.

A sympathetic approach towards those who are among the city's least fortunate men and women, without prejudice against any discriminatory factors those people may present such as ethnicity, religion, sexual identity, etc.
