About this volunteering opportunity

You will aid visitors to the Museum with entrance ticket sales, events bookings, shop purchases and café service.
Main activities:
- Sell Museum entrance tickets to visitors using the new computerised till system
- Handle shop sales and provide excellent customer service to all visitors
- Process Museum events booking and payments using the computerised till system
- Café service and sales using the computerised till system
- Provide visitor information and handle enquiries
- Occasional assistance with group booking visits
- General cleaning and maintenance

About this organisation

The museum holds an internationally important collection of work by the artists and craftspeople who were drawn to the village, including the sculptor, wood engraver, type-designer and letter-cutter Eric Gill, the calligrapher Edward Johnston (responsible for the famous Johnston typeface used for London Underground), the painter David Jones, the printer Hilary Pepler and the weaver Ethel Mairet.

Induction, training and support offered with this opportunity

We provide:
- Training relevant to the role, including customer service procedures for ticket, shop and café sales, till operation and usage and Disability, Health & Safety and Fire Awareness training.
- An opportunity to gain knowledge and understanding of the artistic heritage of Ditchling and Britain's artistic community of the early 20th century
- The experience of supporting and being involved in a cultural organisation which is run by both professional staff and volunteer community
- The support of both part-time Front of House staff and full time Managerial staff in order to successfully fulfil volunteer roles
- 20% off in the Museum Shop and Café, with free tea and coffee on shift.
- Volunteers are also invited to attend Private Views of our temporary exhibitions and the various lectures and talks held by the museum.

Skills or experience needed for this opportunity

This role would suit someone who:
- Takes pride in offering excellent visitor experience
- Is interested and enthusiastic about cultural heritage
- Enjoys talking to and with visitors and is able to engage with a diverse range of people
- Is flexible, adaptable and able to respond to fluctuating workload activities
- Is happy to work with other volunteers and staff members
- Would like to work in a vibrant Museum shop environment
