About this volunteering opportunity

Witness Service Court Volunteers are based in Crown and Magistrates Courts. The role involves providing support to witnesses, and their supporters, by explaining the court procedures and legal terminology, showing them around the courtroom before trial and sitting in the courtroom with them, when permitted. It will also involve liaising with court staff and other statutory agencies.

Volunteers start before 9am and finish at the latest at 5pm, before 2 to 4 days per month. 

About this organisation

The Witness Service provides practical and emotional support and information to witnesses so that they feel valued, respected and informed and able to give their best evidence in court. Volunteers are based in Crown and Magistrates Courts. The role involves providing support to witnesses, and their supporters, by explaining court procedures and legal terminology, showing them around the courtroom before trial and sitting in the courtroom with them, when permitted and liaising with professionals

Induction, training and support offered with this opportunity

We offer very comprehensive training and support to volunteers. 3  full days core training, supported by distance learning packs. A period of shadowing and being shadowed by experienced volunteers, checkpoint meetings with your team leader during training and accreditation. Regular one to ones with your team leader, peer support and free counselling service if required. 

Skills or experience needed for this opportunity

Witness Service volunteers are pragmatic, reliable and adaptable. You need to have excellent listening and verbal communication skills and demonstrate discretion and impartiality. A supportive and empathetic manner towards others is essential. Confidence and an ability to work with professionals is important. Flexibility and ability to travel, as well as IT competency, are helpful.

Volunteers need to demonstrate respect for the diversity of all people, and ensure equal access is offered to all witnesses and and their supporters.
