About this volunteering opportunity

Overall Purpose     

  • To provide a warm and welcoming reception to visitors to the Centre and to answer queries in person and on the telephone.

Café and Reception Duties

  • Perform reception duties, including answering the phone, taking messages, dealing with enquiries and giving basic information to those interested in courses
  • Serve customers with hot and cold drinks and snacks, and take payment
  • Serve customers who would like to use the drop-in computer area by noting their name and taking payment as well as dealing with printer/ photocopier enquiries
  • Deal with enquiries about displaying leaflets and posters in the Centre

The Whitehawk Inn is the place in East Brighton where people can develop and fulfill their aspirations for their own lives, their families and their community through learning and advice. We offer 1:1 advice sessions covering money issues and careers advice as well as a wide range of adult education courses.

Induction, training and support offered with this opportunity

Your induction will cover learning a range of tasks including using the coffee machine, the till and using the diary system on a computer. We will cover Health & Safety and our policies and procedures to achieve a safe working environment.

Skills or experience needed for this opportunity

Essential qualifications and previous experience

  • Experience of working with the public and dealing with customers

Desirable qualifications and previous experience

  • Experience of using a till for simple transactions

Essential skills, attributes and knowledge

  • Excellent communication skills: face to face, written & on phone
  • Ability to cope in stressful situations
  • Ability to listen and accurately disseminate information
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Evidence of understanding of, and commitment to, Equal Opportunities
