BECOME A GREEN CHAMPION 2008!
GREEN CHAMPION 2008 WAS A COMMUNITY BASE INITIATIVE THAT WAS ONLY INTENDED TO LAST FOR ONE YEAR, SO THIS SITE HAS NOT BEEN UPDATED SINCE DECEMBER 2008. WE'VE KEPT THE SITE HERE FOR INFORMATION.
Green Champion 2008 is a campaign bringing together community and voluntary groups in Brighton and Hove willing to make ten practical commitments to fight climate change. All groups willing to make these commitments are listed on this website and get a Green Champion 2008 sticker.
The first commitment groups make is to appoint an individual to champion energy efficiency in their group. These champions will decide how they want to take forward the work of Green Champion 2008 in 2009.
All you need for your community or voluntary group in Brighton and Hove to become a Green Champion 2008 is make the following ten commitments. If your group does not have premises or is not responsible for the energy use of its premises you do not need to make commitments 2, 3, 4 and 7.
1 WE WILL APPOINT A GREEN CHAMPION for our organisation with responsibility for making energy efficiency central to our organisation's everyday life.
2 IF WE HAVE POWER BILLS WE WILL MEASURE THE ENERGY WE USE. By keeping track of your energy bills you can measure the effects of your energy saving measures.
3 IF WE ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR CHOOSING WHERE WE GET OUR ELECTRICITY FROM WE WILL GET IT FROM 100% RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES. You can compare green and not-so-green electricity tariffs at the Green Electricity Marketplace.
4 WE WILL ONLY HEAT WHAT WE NEED TO HEAT. This means making sure any central heating on any premises we have is set to no more than 19 degrees centigrade and using on/off and timer switches to make sure heating isn't on when you don't need it, for instance at weekends or in rooms that are not being used.
5 WE WILL TURN COMPUTERS OFF AT NIGHT. Computers are designed to be turned on and off 40,000 times so make sure all your monitors and computers, other than servers that need to stay on, are turned off at night.
6 WE WILL TURN ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT OFF WHEN WE DON'T NEED IT ON. This means reducing the amount of gadgets and appliances you leave on standby when not in use - an average office wastes £6,000 a year by leaving equipment on over weekends and bank holidays.
7 IF WE HAVE PREMISES WE WILL SWITCH TO ENERGY EFFICIENT LIGHTING. This means using low energy light bulbs and efficient lighting systems and making sure you put lights off when they're not needed.
8 WE WILL RECYCLE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE of our paper, cardboard, plastic, cans, aluminium, printer cartridges, unwanted furniture and old computers. You can find out about local groups that will help you recycle and reuse stuff on our what else can we do? page.
9 WE WILL USE WASHABLE MUGS, CUPS AND PLATES RATHER THAN DISPOSABLE ONES. It's cheaper, nicer and miles better for the environment - we could circle the equator 14 times with the disposable cups used in the UK each year.
10 WE WILL ENCOURAGE WALKING, CYCLING AND THE USE OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT BY OUR MEMBERS AND STAFF. This means not subsidising people to drive places when they could just as easily walk or cycle or take the bus or train.
